Development

Here is the place to log development related problems and future plans.

    Metadata

We need metadata added for alternate spellings of names so that search results will catch pages. Rangi/Langi is a good example.

    Forums

I’ve gone around and around on the forum vs. comment issue for user-added information/links. I’ve currently decided to try to implement something without a separate forum since it is hard to integrate the two for users, theme, searching, etc.

    Facebook-style share a link

I like this function in Facebook since it takes a lot of the work away from the user and also keeps things neat. I haven’t found a plugin that will do this.

Until then we can use simple comments (I’ve added tinyMCE for some formatting.

    Improved comments

I’ve added all the bells and whistles:

    • Users can edit their own comments
    • Thumbs up/down (Still trying to figure out how to turn off stars)
    • Report inappropriate comments
    • tinyMCE (well that was already in place)

I think this gives us a pretty seamless system for allowing user contributions without a heavy setup like a forum or child-posts.

    Search Engine (take 2)

I reworked the Search Engine again. Now I am using the Search Everything plugin plus a tweaked search.php to give only the post title and category. Once we get alternative names added to the tags our results should be much improved.

How to rebuild the database without losing user-contributions

My current idea on this is to edit the files created by WP Backup on a localhost setup and then upload them to the site.

    I’m experimenting with this.

Trying to implement Google Custom Search. Having a few problems but have contacted the developer of the plugin.

I pulled the Google Custom Search plugin and am trying Quick Search plugin. It seems quite good. It’s Ajax and quite fast.
